What’s it all about?
Taunton castle was once the heart of a large estate owned by the Bishop of Winchester, sprawling across thousands of acres. Many historic nobles were entertained here including King John and his son Henry III. The castle also endured its fair share of sieges and battles during the English Civil War. Today, the castle houses nine themed galleries. Each tells the story of the county from prehistoric times to the present day.

There’s plenty to see and explore at the Museum of Taunton in Somerset. The nine themed galleries are the focal point of the visit. Starting with the first which explores how the Somerset landscape has formed over 400 million years. From here, you can discover who were the very first human settlers, how they farmed the land and eventually how the county was transformed by the arrival of road and rail, dramatically altering how people lived and worked here.
The museum also offers a number of tours. A guide around the different galleries will allow you to ask questions and really get to know the history of the county. If you’d prefer to know more about the actual castle then the castle tour is one to get excited about. The tour gives a unique behind-the-scenes look at life during different periods. However, since this tour does literally go behind the scenes there are lots of steep and uneven routes so we recommend only booking this tour if you are very mobile.

How do I get there from the Berrys drop-off point?
The museum is approximately 10 minutes from the Berrys Coaches drop-off at the Kings Arms pub in Taunton. Walk onto Bridge Street and keep going for about half a mile, crossing over the Taunton town bridge.
When you get to the other side, turn right and shortly you’ll come to Castle Row. The castle and museum will be almost immediately on your right.
